Wow! TripIt for iPhone had a big first day

Our new iPhone app is making quite a splash.  As of 9am PT on Wednesday, after one day of getting the word out, the app is number three on the Top Free Travel Apps list, and number nine on the Most Popular Travel Apps list on the App Store. Thanks to everyone who downloaded it!

We got a ton of great feedback about the app yesterday, and we made some immediate improvements based on the comments and suggestions we received. A new and improved version of the app was pushed to the App Store last night, and will be available soon.

These are the most important bug fixes in the update:

  1. When loading the app with poor or no connectivity, itineraries seemed to disappear
  2. Some itineraries (especially those crossing the dateline) were showing incorrect times for items
  3. The app would crash when it tried to load certain Rail and Cruise items

Your iPhone or iTunes will let you know as soon as the new version is available.

Thanks to everyone who downloaded the app, helped us identify bugs, and suggested improvements. We want to make our app as helpful as possible to travelers, so keep your input coming

New TripIt API - First Open Travel Itinerary

Today we’re thrilled to announce the release of the TripIt API, an important step in our history. Put simply, the TripIt API makes it easy for other web sites and applications to put data into and take data out of TripIt. Of course, all data exchange happens only with user permission.

When you think about it, the travel itinerary is the perfect source of data for travel-related applications. Until now, itinerary data has been trapped inside many different systems and applications–your business travel information might be in a GDS like Sabre or online booking tool like GetThere, while your leisure travel information is probably scattered across sites like Expedia, Marriott.com, and others. And your information about activities, meetings and restaurants are in different places, too. On top of all this, most sites that hold your information typically aren’t open to third parties, so there’s really no easy way to access ALL the information in your travel itinerary, until TripIt.

TripIt has always been about bringing together the various parts of a trip into a single, master itinerary. Our email import technology, the Itinerator, helps travelers automatically input information from different sources into a single place. Because TripIt is the only place where travelers can store ALL the components of a trip, we’ve had companies contacting us since we launched about how they could interface with us.

Behold the TripIt API which opens up the TripIt itinerary platform to third parties. Here are just a few examples of what’s possible with the TripIt API:

“Add to TripIt” –  A tour company might present its online customers with an “Add to TripIt” button, which would transmit reservation details automatically to the traveler’s TripIt account. This is pretty cool for the traveler, but also great for the tour company who now has immediate access to the powerful tools TripIt offers, such as a mobile application and live sync to the traveler’s calendar.

Expense Applications – A travel expense application could import your travel activity (basics like air, hotel, and car, and also restaurants, ground transportation and events) directly into an expense report for you. The expense app only needs a single connection to TripIt to access this data, and can avoid the cost and complexity of interfacing with various GDS and other booking systems. Note: Expens’d is already using the TripIt API to provide this service.

Ground Transportation – When you book a rental car or airport limo, you often need to look up your flight information so you can schedule your pick-up. Using the TripIt API, the ground transportation company could look at your TripIt itinerary and see your flight information automatically. Also, if your flight plans changed, the scheduled pick-up could be updated accordingly.

These are just a few ideas, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the many more useful and interesting ways that developers dream up to take advantage of the TripIt API. Many applications are currently under development and will be released over the next few weeks, and we’ll be featuring them here as they launch. So keep an eye out for TripIt, as we might be popping up in some unexpected places!

Show your TripIt activity on Windows Live

If you are one of the 400 million people around the world who use any of the Windows Live services (including Hotmail and Messenger), we have a treat for you. Microsoft has made TripIt one of eleven services that can now be hooked up to your Windows Live experience. Social activity updates can now be brought right into the applications you use every day, like emailing and instant messaging. Pretty cool!

Windows_live_screen_shot_8 Here’s an example of how it works.  Imagine you are chatting with your friend Sally in Windows Live Messenger.  During that chat, she may see a message that says “Bob is about to leave on a trip to Paris, France for 4 days,” which of course comes from your TripIt activity feed.  Sally might then tell you that she just visited Paris last month and has some great restaurant tips and other advice to share with you.  Similar updates might be displayed after sending an email to someone in Hotmail or by visiting a friend’s Windows Live profile page.  The goal is to make it easier to stay connected to your social network by bringing relevant news and updates right into the applications you use every day.

Since TripIt aggregates all your travel activity, no matter where you book, we were the natural source of travel activity for Microsoft to include in this new service. We’re thrilled to be one of the eleven popular web services chosen for this new feature, including Flickr, Yelp, Twitter, and others.

If you have a Windows Live account, you can hook up TripIt activity updates by going to http://profile.live.com. Log on with your Windows Live ID and password, and then look for the link that says “add web activities” in the lower left hand corner. This link will take you to a menu page, and you’ll see TripIt in the column on the right hand side. Just click “add” and complete the simple setup instructions.

Enjoy!

TripIt and LinkedIn launch new social travel service

This summer LinkedIn asked TripIt to develop a travel service as part of their new application platform. Since LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with over 30 million members, we didn’t have to think twice about saying yes. In fact, we’re honored and excited to be the only travel company selected by LinkedIn. Now, after months spent working closely with them, we’re pleased to announce the official launch of TripIt's My Travel application on LinkedIn.

Li_homepage_app_2 The My Travel application on LinkedIn is directly connected to your TripIt account. The application lets you see where and when your LinkedIn network is traveling. It generates closeness alerts for your LinkedIn colleagues, so you can connect with them while you’re on the road, while they’re on the road, or when you’re attending the same industry event. My Travel also displays your current location, upcoming trips and travel stats on your LinkedIn profile.  You can create trips either manually via LinkedIn or by simply emailing your purchase confirmations directly to plans [at] tripit.com as always.  If you use either TripIt or LinkedIn, you have to install My Travel and check it out.

Our partnership with LinkedIn is core to our mission to give travelers a home base for all their travel information, no matter where they happen to book. One of the ways we work toward that goal is by continuing to support more travel services (now over 250). Another way is by working with the services and applications travelers love.  Our partnership with LinkedIn is a terrific example of how integrating with other highly valued services enhances the experience for everyone.  It's just one more great reason to remember to use TripIt every time you travel.

Please visit the LinkedIn Application Directory to install My Travel and let us know what you think.
